Over two hot days in June some unusual activity was taking place at 31 Tyrone Street in Episkopi. If you dared to look closely you would see that the place had been transformed into a 'horrible hazardous house'.
Akrotiri and Episkopi primary schools collaborated to create two 'Risk Days' as part of their year six pupils transition to secondary school. The School Nurses, Children's Nurses and Fire Service created the 'horrible hazardous house' as a learning tool to highlight potential dangers within the home, to teach the children fire safety and how to extinguish a fire. Children were also taught about heat exhaustion, the index factor and skin cancer.
For two days students visited the horrible hazardous house and used fire extinguishers to put out live fires to experience a simulation of a real house fire. They also played sun safety card games, made posters and searched the house to identify the 9 most common accidents that take place within the home.
Hosting the risk days was an absolute pleasure and a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with the wider community; working together for a safer future.
