Big Brew Up 2011
In October every year SSAFA holds a series events around the world which all involve a
cup of tea.
In Cyprus, the Big Brew Up week started off in fine style in the Ermes car park in Dhekelia.
Tents were set up, cakes baked and Burco boilers were bubbling away. For three hours military
personnel and families turned up for a piece of cake (or three!) and a cup of tea. As Ermes car park
is quite a way from Alexander Barracks, the current home of 2nd Btn Anglian Regt - Poachers,
the Dhekelia In-Service Committee Chair, Loo Wooddisse, held a simultaneous Big Brew Up for
the soldiers there. They raised €450 between both locations
A few days later it was the turn of 2nd Btn The Yorkshire Regt - The Green Howards in Episkopi.
In “The Shack” they provided the obligatory cups of tea with a selection of cakes from England,
Scotland, Wales and Fiji. Again this was a great success with the Fijian cakes being the first
to sell out. Like Dhekelia it wasn’t only regimental personnel who came to sample the wares, staff from HQ BFC and HQ Episkopi
Garrison also appeared. Even the GSM found the time to try a piece of cake. They raised €300.
RAF Akrotiri decided they wanted a bit of decorum at their Big Brew Up. Jo Thomson and her team from the Akrotri In-Service
Committee decided to hold an afternoon Tea Party in the gardens of Akrotiri House, the home of RAF Akrotiri Station Commander,
Group Captain Barrie Thomson. Sandwiches with crusts cut off, scones with strawberry jam and cream and lemon curd meringues
were just some of goodies on offer. Jo and her team decided not to charge a set fee to come to the event, visitors just needed to
collect free tickets from Akrotiri Hive. However when they arrived a donation into the SSAFA tins was all that was required to tuck
into the huge array of food on offer.
SSAFA Branch held their Big Brew Up at the SSAFA 10K Challenge in Happy Valley. They provided bacon rolls, hamburgers,
tea, coffee and water to the runners and spectators. They raised €290.
