CYPRUS

A NANNY IS NOT REQUIRED BY LAW
TO HOLD ANY CHILDCARE QUALIFICATIONS.

However if they wish to become part of the Voluntary Ofsted Childcare Register they should have the same requirements as a childminder and have “common core” competencies.

In order to register on the Ofsted Voluntary Childcare Register and/or to comply with Ofsted requirements child-carers are required to undertake common core of skills and knowledge training.

The Children’s Workforce and Development Council agreed a “common core” of basic skills and knowledge that everyone working with children and young people is expected to have.

TELL ME MORE...

A CHILDMINDER IS A SELF-EMPLOYED BUSINESS PERSON WHO WORKS FROM THEIR OWN HOME, WITH CHILDREN FROM DIFFERENT FAMILIES.

They can also work in venues other than their home for 50% of their time, therefore giving a more flexible approach to childcare.

They are registered to care for 6 children under the age of 8 years old. To register with SSAFA as a childminder they must be over 18 years of age and care for children in their own home for more than 2 hours a day for reward or payment.

TELL ME MORE...

A BABYSITTER IS SOMEONE WHO WILL LOOK AFTER YOUR CHILD OR CHILDREN IN YOUR OWN HOME, FOR SHORT PERIODS OF TIME.

Babysitters are not formal childcare, it is parental choice.

Babysitters are not registered and at present there are no regulations which govern them.

Babysitters do not need any qualifications to look after children – anybody can advertise their services as a babysitter.

Parents and carers must decide themselves whether someone is suitable and responsible enough to look after their children.

WHAT DOES SSAFA DO AND HOW CAN WE HELP?

SSAFA has been granted accreditation by the Secretary of State for regulating childcare provision overseas, as would be undertaken by Ofsted in England.  This means SSAFA is responsible for the registration and inspection of early years services in British Forces Cyprus this includes childminders and crèche provision.

SSAFA works in partnership with Prospects Services Early Years Inspection Service to provide inspection services for us on Cyprus. Prospects Services currently run the largest Early Years Inspection contract in the Midlands and North of England on behalf of Ofsted, inspecting nearly 30,000 early years and child care providers. Prospects Services carry out both day care and childminder inspections across SBA’s in Cyprus.

SSAFA can also help you decide whether to apply to be a childminder and support you through the application process. SSAFA provides advice, training and support to childminders and there is an island wide SSAFA Childcare Co-ordinator and local administrators who will help and support you through the application and registration process, and beyond
