SSAFA Spring 4X4 Scenic Drive
9.00am on 30th April was a beautiful Saturday morning. In the village of Timi near Paphos thirty
off road vehicles arrived at Timi Sunday Market, all looking forward to the SSAFA Spring 4X4
Scenic Drive.
The participants had to decide in which of the two groups to travel. The first group was made up
of well prepared Land Rovers and Mitsubishis ready to tackle some difficult terrain. The second
group consisted of smaller, less robust, 4x4 vehicles like Toyota Rav4 and Daihatsus The route
took the groups across the Asprokremnos Dam and then north. At the ford crossing the Xeros
river, the first group got half way across the ford and turned right and drove up the river. The
second group, which had lower ground clearance, carried straight over the ford and then
stopped further up the road to watch the first group playing in the water and then join the road.
again. After climbing up to Ayios Marina and back down to the river again, we stopped to have a wander around the old
monastery at Sinti. The views in this area were stunning and we could have been the lake district with all the hills and
greenery. After 30 minutes we were off again and the next point of interest was the old deserted Turkish Cypriot village of
Vretsia, from where the groups split again. The first group took a long and very steep decent back down to several river
crossings while the second group followed the forest track down to meet up again at Roudias Venetian Bridge. After a brief
stop we then carried on for another 30 minutes to get to our lunch stop at Pera Vasa picnic area. Everyone tucked into
their picnics and enjoyed the chance to sit still and talk to their friends. After an hour we all set off again to the second
Venetian Bridge of the day at Tsielefos. After another short stop to look at the bridge and take more photos, the group
split for the final time. One group went back down to the B6 via an off road route taking in more river driving while the
second group went back down to the B6 by road.
This was an amazing day and everyone agreed it was the best SSAFA 4x4dayxfar!
