Cyprus Sun Shines Kindly on Dhekelia Dash

The Cyprus sun was kind to contestants and visitors alike as the 2014 Dhekelia Dash got under way.

The 2014 Dhekelia Dash found volunteers from the SSAFA Committee, led by the committee’s Chair, Louise Wolstenholme, joining forces with SSAFA Professional Health and Social Care staff offering advice and support on everything from healthy eating to dealing with a wide range of problems associated with living overseas.

The Dhekelia Dash is a fifteen mile relay race in fifteen laps, with each competitor running one kilometre. The Dhekelia Dash raises substantial amounts for charities, both Cypriot and British.

Spectaculars sky diving opened the show, as BFBS Radio provided music and commentary and Sodexo provided refreshments. Stalls ranged from local sweets to pottery, and motoring enthusiasts were treated to a display of motor bikes used by the ‘Bondu Rats’ motor cycle club.

A regular exhibitor at the annual Dhekelia Dash, both the members of the SSAFA committee and the Health and Social Care teams were kept busy as families dropped by for a chat or chance to ask a few questions, and get some advice. SSAFA also ran competitions for children designed to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

The races were started by Dhekelia’s Station Commander, Lt Colonel Kevin Grantham, who took part in a race escorting a youngster round the course; both finished in good time. Col Grantham was quick to praise the event,” It is great to welcome teams from both within and outside the base with entries from international schools, expats and the wider community. The money raised by the event will go to numerous good causes in the future.”
