Sensory Garden Dhekelia

In July 2014 I was approached by Mike Westall, Head of the Art Department at KRS, to see if I needed anything creative for our newly developed sensory garden outside the Health Zone in Dhekelia.

After some debate we agreed that as a project it would be mutually beneficial to create some flowers to give an air of ‘wackiness’ to an otherwise neat space.

This is a children’s garden and we are trying to incorporate all of the sensory elements within the area but clearly need to keep safety as a priority. We also need to keep in mind our age range which is mainly 0-5 year olds.

Mike came up with a prototype which ticked all the boxes (and some) and after some negotiation we agreed what was required.

This week we took ownership of our flowers and they have far surpassed expectations.

They are stood up in bespoke wooden boxes courtesy of Steven Guy.

Each ‘flower’ has its own unique character and it is obvious how much time and care has been taken to fill the brief.

I’d like to say a big thank you to all the young people who helped create these wonderful flowers, they already add a different dimension to the garden and I am sure they will bring a smile to the faces of all who see them.
