The original concept was to hold a mini Brew Up at the Air Terminal to coincide with events taking place in the UK; the larger fundraising campaign will be held in October to take advantage of the cooler climate. It was logical to have it on a Trooper day and this was supported by the Station Commander (Gp Capt Kennett), Officer Commanding Logistics Wing (Wg Cdr Cameron) and Officer Commanding Joint Movements Squadron (Sqn Ldr Fountain); the latter having responsibility for the terminal. The Lead Officer, Flight Lieutenant Laura Tansey, from Joint Movements Squadron, spread the word via Facebook and utilised her contacts within BFBS to great effect, raising the profile of the event and the means by which station personnel could get involved and thus the SSAFA Brew Up grew wings!
A huge thank you must also go to Martine Spridonos, Communications Manager and PA to Peter Scargill (Managing Director of Sodexo), who was extremely influential in making the day the success it was. Sodexo kindly arranged vouchers for baking ingredients. All the cake donors needed to do was to present the voucher at the check out to receive their free goodies, add a bit of flair and imagination and voila! We had some amazing cakes donated to the stall demonstrating the breadth of talent on the base, for which we were truly grateful. One lady even baked despite her belongings being transported to her next posting, such was the enthusiasm. Sodexo also provided extra cupcakes and muffins and much needed refreshments.
The much admired strawberry and cream sponge cake (the tea cup cake) donated by Brigadoodles Bakers went up for auction. In the end, Wg Cdr Cameron purchased it and gifted it to Laura who assured us it tasted even better than it looked!
All this aside, it wasn’t just a captive audience who contributed so generously. if it wasn’t for the serving personnel and families coming out of their way to the terminal, we would not have raised €543.16 we did on the day. Thank you so much. Your donations will remain on camp to support serving personnel and their families, not to mention community projects in the near future.
Finally, many thanks to the ladies who helped set-up and run the stall, so many to mention but you know who you are. a special mention to Ann, who only came out to Cyprus for a holiday!
